Who are the Kshatriya Pawar (Panwar) Community?

The Kshatriya Pawar Samaj (also spelled Panwar, Powar, or Puar) is a historically significant Kshatriya community with deep roots in central India. Known as Bhoyar Pawar in parts of Vidarbha and eastern Madhya Pradesh, this community traces its lineage to the ancient Agnivanshi branch of the Kshatriyas and the illustrious Paramara (Parmar) dynasty of Malwa.

The Paramara Dynasty — Origin of the Pawar Name

The Paramara dynasty was one of the most powerful Rajput dynasties of medieval India, ruling over the Malwa region with their capital at Ujjain and later Dhar. King Bhoj of Dhar (11th century) is one of the most celebrated rulers of this dynasty.

The name "Pawar" is derived from "Parmar" or "Paramara." Over centuries, as the community migrated and settled in new regions, the pronunciation evolved into variants like Panwar, Powar, and Puar.

The Great Migration to Satpura & Vidarbha

Following the defeat of the Parmar rulers by Alauddin Khilji's forces in the early 14th century (circa 1305 CE), a significant migration occurred. Pawar clans moved from the Malwa plains into the forested Satpura mountain range and the Vidarbha region. They settled in areas that now fall in:

  • Madhya Pradesh: Betul, Chhindwara, Seoni, Balaghat, Multai, Itarsi
  • Maharashtra: Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Amravati, Pandhurna

In these new homelands, they became known as Bhoyar Pawar — a name possibly linked to the historical Bhorgarh fort or the local term for settled landholders.

The 72-Clan Confederacy

A defining feature of the Pawar social structure is the tradition of 72 Kshatriya clans (gotras). These clans maintained endogamous marriage traditions, preserving the community's distinct Kshatriya identity over centuries. Each clan has its own kuldevi (family goddess), traditional rituals, and ancestral village.

Cultural Identity & Modern Life

Today, the Kshatriya Pawar community has produced professionals in every field — engineers, doctors, teachers, government officers, and business leaders. While many have migrated to cities like Bhopal, Indore, Pune, and Nagpur, the community maintains strong ties to its heritage through:
